當你在職場英文面試時，想說出自己「偏好」這個令人滿意的職缺；或是面對外國同事、朋友邀約時，想告訴他們在這個武肺疫情的非常時期，比起出國更「寧願」待在家時，你知道要如何用英文正確表達嗎？

很多問題的開頭都是 Would you rather…，那就讓我們一起來看看 rather 的各種用法吧！
＃各種「偏好、寧願」的用法
❶ Rather 相當；有點兒
He seems rather drunk.（他看起來有點醉。）
❷ Or rather 更確切地說
Tina is my best friend, or rather she used to be my best friend.（Tina 是我的好朋友，更準確地說，她曾經是我的好朋友。）
❸ Would rather 寧願；（與其⋯⋯）倒不如
If it keeps raining, I would rather go home.（如果一直下雨，我寧願回家算了。）
另外，如果是 would rather…than 的用法，than 後面要接 原形動詞 ：I would rather go to bed than watch the baseball game.（我寧願上床睡覺，也不要看棒球比賽。）
❹ Rather than 而不是⋯⋯
Rather than 作為連接詞的時候，rather than 前後的詞性跟時態要一致 ：
We decided to order takeout rather than cook at home.（我們決定訂外送而不是在家煮飯。）→ 前後皆為 動詞
I prefer staying at home rather than going out.（我喜歡待在家而不是出門。）→ 前後皆為 動名詞
He chose the red shirt rather than the blue one.（他選了那件紅色襯衫，而不是藍色那件。）→ 前後皆為 名詞
而當 rather than 用作介系詞時，後面也可以接動名詞：Rather than judging someone by appearance, we should also value one’s personality.（我們應該重視一個人的個性，而不是用外表去評斷。）
❺ Instead 作為替代；反而
Let’s not go to the party. Instead, let’s stay at home watching a movie.（我們別去派對了吧。讓我們來待在家看電影。）
❻ Instead of 代替；寧願
I played video games instead of doing homework last night.（昨晚我打電動而沒有寫功課。）
Instead of 跟 rather than 在表達的語意上的小差異在於，rather than 比較著重對於兩個選項的「偏好」，而 instead of 在兩個選項之間的「替代」感覺比較強烈。
❼ Prefer 寧願；更喜歡
Prefer 後面可以接 名詞、不定詞或是動名詞 ，像是：
I prefer a job with a good salary.（我偏好有令人滿意的薪水的工作。）
I prefer taking / to take a job with a good salary.（我偏好接下有令人滿意的薪水的工作。）
如果要做兩個事物的比較，則用 prefer…to…，需用 動名詞或是名詞：I prefer milk tea to coffee.（我喜歡奶茶勝過咖啡。）、I prefer drinking milk tea to drinking coffee.（我喜歡喝奶茶勝過喝咖啡。）
